Dandy in the Underworld
Marc Bolan & T Rex
11th March 1977, Apollo, Manchester
The Manchester Apollo has a seated capacity of around 2,700 and had previously been built as a cinema in 1930 (1). This was the first time that Marc had played the Apollo as previous concerts in Manchester had been at the Free Trade Hall and Bell Vue.
The 'Dandy in the Underworld' album was released on this day to critical acclaim from most sections of the music press. This would be T Rex's last officially released album in Marc's lifetime.
The tour party stayed the night at The Post House hotel on the edge of Manchester.
A poor quality bootleg recording of this concert exists and was circulated as a cassette tape amongst T Rex fans in the late 1970's. It is possible that an acetate album of the concert exists, though this will almost certainly be the same quality as the tape.
The Apollo remains a leading music venue in Manchester (official website manchesterapollo).
